Do I need to be referred by my GP for physiotherapy treatment?
You do not need to be referred by your doctor for treatment. Physiotherapists are autonomous practitioners and their extensive specialist training means they should be ‘your first port of call' for any musculo-skeletal problem. Your Physiotherapist will advise you if you need to see a doctor with regard to your condition.
Some health insurance companies state that you require a doctors referral if you wish them to pay for your treatment, so it is essential for you to check your policy before starting treatment.
